I love the idea of having a stand-out kitchen island in an all white kitchen. Keeping the island natural or stained wood does just that! And I think this look fits in perfectly with the 'new traditional' trend that is so hot right now! I love an all white kitchen, but these islands would add the perfect layer of texture and color to an otherwise all white space:

Fabulous examples. I like them all, but then I am a softie for a bit of timber mixed in with other finishes. The bench in the first one is especially lovely.

Nancy I remember when this look came in. I did this look for several clients almost ten years ago. I love the look!! I think it is probably going to date itself but paint is cheap so why not go for what you love!!! I did one house with a black island and one with a dark green island, both with cream cupboards. It looked great when all done. Kathysue
Adore timber islands!! The second image with the island with the drawers (and the copper pots over the stove) has me drooling!
Great observation! As a contrast to the glossy white cabinets, these natural wood islands kind of come off as a rustic element in these kitchens. How lovely!
